The mapped visitor center is outside the park, roughly five miles from the West Entrance, not the entrance itself. Use current National Park Service directions rather than generic GPS routing. Check alerts and road conditions before departure. In summer, favor scenic driving and scale back even short walks.
Why it made the guide
Joshua trees, boulder formations, and broad high-desert views differ markedly from the scenery around Palm Springs, so the park is better treated as an unhurried day than a quick detour.
